Auto Mode

Autoexposure mode is when there is pre-determined settings for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. The camera automatically adjusts these setting for the sceneario. The icon for auto mode is represented by a small green box in canon cameras and by the word auto in nikon cameras. The green box is generic and stands for the fact that the photographer doesn't manipulate the settings. This mode would be used mostly by beginners and a picture needs to be taken quickly.

Portrait Mode

Portrait Mode is when the camera believes that there is subject ( usually human) that will be the focus of the picture so the camera blurs out the background. The icon for portrait mode is a lady's head in all canon cameras and it is represented by a zig zag arrow surrounded by a circle in all nikon cameras. This lady's head symbolizes the portrait mode becuase this mode is meant for taking shots of humans. Potrait mode is mostly used by photogrpahers for capturing close-up pictures of humans with a blurry background.

Macro Mode

Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects that are very small such as bugs or other tiny creatures. The photographer will not be able to use the full extent of this mode unless he/she has a macro lens. The icon for the mode is the tulip flower in both canon and nikon cameras. This symbolizes when you take pictures of tiny objects that are smaller than you such a a tulip flower. Macro mode is used by photographers to capture pictures of objects that are small (macro) and make them see bigger wand keep the dubject in focus by blurring out the background.

Landscape Mode

Landscape mode is used to create a picture that is very much focused and is utilized to condense a large scenery. A smaller aperture is equipped to create a picture with a lot of clarity. The icon of landscape mode is mountains with a cloud in canon cameras and it is mountains that are in a square in nikon cameras. The mountains in both modes symbolize a natural scenery and a location that was beautiful. This mode is used most often for fhooting landscpaes in the Earth such as mountains, beaches, and other scenic views.

Sports Mode

Sports mode is used for capturing pictures with a lot more movement than normal. There is a higher shutter speed that is being utilized to create a shot that will capture what the photogrpaher wants. The icon of sports mode is a person doing a sports pose or lying across something in canon cameras and it is a person dancing in nikon cameras. This symbolizes that there is movement in both of those scenarios, and movement is what sports mode is meant for. This mode is used to capture action shots or scenearios with a lot of movement.

Night Portrait Mode

Night Portrait mode is when there is a wder aperture to allow more light to illuminate the subject becuase since the picture is taken during the night, there would be a lot less lighting than normal. The icon of the mode is the same in both nikon cameras and canon cameras. It is a person's head and neck with star in the sky during the night, which is represented by a dark background. This symbolizes how stars are present during the night showing the night portrait mode. This mode is used by photographers and shows how it works best during the night becuase that is when there is the least light in a day.
