The rule of thirds is most commonly is thought of as the main rule of composition. The rule of thirds states that there are 9 imaginary points at the intersections of the lines when the picture is split horizontally and vertically. The idea is that those sections that are formed create a frame or basis for the positioning of your picture. It changes the interest point and adds more dimension into a picture.

The rule of thirds works by splitting the picture into thirds. The 4 lines are each signified as a "point of focus" and you are supposed to position the subject or focal point of your picture into onto of those lines . It apperently works by directing the eye.

In the picture above, your can see how the picture as split. the bird falls right onto the line and is exactly one third of the picture. When someone first view this photo, the composition of it guides there eye. This is how the rule of thirds come in handy.
